Big Picture is an innovative learning design that has had meaningful impact in the US and around the world. It puts students at the center of their own learning, following a mantra of ‘one student at a time’. The approach explicitly drives engagement in and motivation for learning by unlocking each individual learner’s passions and interests. After the age of 14, every young person spends two days a week on a term-long ‘Real-World-Learning placement’ which pairs them with a mentor, learning in a real world setting linked to their passions and interests. They pursue a rigorously designed project that has meaning and authentic value, and gives them the chance to see how what they learn in the classroom relates to the outside world.
