About the Organization: Established in 2002, the Black Philanthropic Alliance is a network of African-American professionals in the nonprofit and philanthropic sector committed to providing quality professional and leadership development opportunities, raising issues that directly affect the community and creating opportunities for increased discourse and action, sharing knowledge to increase members' skills and expertise, increasing representation on boards and staffs of nonprofits and philanthropic institutions, expanding access to funding opportunities, facilitating strategic partnerships to build board capacity at African American-led nonprofits, and increasing individual giving to organizations led by and/or serving the African-American community. Current Programs: The organization provides a "safe space" in which African-Americans can meet regularly to network and discuss issues that affect them in their work. It also provides members with news, resources, and social networking opportunities hosts educational programs and events. In partnership with a D.C.-based African-American philanthropist, BPA launched Black Benefactors, a social investment club, or giving circle, comprising individual members, local businesses, and organizations dedicated to addressing issues facing the African-American community. Member donations are pooled to address social issues through grants awarded to organizations serving African-American children, youth, and families in the capital region. Interested visitors can browse the membership directory and/or learn about membership eligibility and benefits and sign up to join BPA.
