Rudolph W. Giuliani, a Republican, was a two-term mayor of New York City. In 1999, he created an exploratory committee for the 2000 U.S. Senate race, but he withdrew from the race on May 19, 2000, after announcing that he had been diagnosed in the early stages of prostate cancer and was seeking a divorce from his then-wife, actress Donna Hanover.
