Donald C. Alexander's experience includes corporate (and subchapter S) taxation; the taxation of partnerships, insurance companies and their products; and employee benefits matters. Mr. Alexander also has an active legislative, tax administration and tax litigation practice. During the course of his legal career, Mr. Alexander has been active in public service. He served from 1973 to 1977 as commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service and received the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Alexander Hamilton Award in 1975. He served from 1975 to 1977 on the Commission on Federal Paperwork, from 1983 to 1984 on the Interior Department's Coal Leasing Commission, from 1984 to 1989 as director of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, from 1987 to 1989 as chairman of the Internal Revenue Service Exempt Organizations Advisory Group and from 1993 to 1996 as a commissioner of the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday Commission. Before joining Akin Gump, he was a partner in the Washington office of Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft. Mr. Alexander received his B.A. with honors in 1942 from Yale University and his LL.B. magna cum laude in 1948 from Harvard University, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. He serves on the Harvard University Board of Overseers' Committee on University Resources, and has served on its Visiting Committee to the Law School. He was awarded an LL.D. by St. Thomas Institute in 1975 and Capital University in 1989. Mr. Alexander was admitted to the District of Columbia Bar in 1949, the Ohio Bar in 1954 and the New York Bar in 1978, where he served as a member of the executive committee of the Tax Section from 1979 to 1993. He is also a member of the American Bar Association, and served as the vice chairman of the Tax Section in 1968-69. In addition, he is a member of the American Law Institute and a fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel. In 2003 Mr. Alexander was selected for inclusion in Euromoney's Guide to the World's Leading Tax Advisers. He has appeared in every edition of The Best Lawyers in America since its inception in 1983. During World War II Mr. Alexander served with the 14th Armored Division and was awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star.
