Alain E. Kaloyeros is Professor of Nanoscience, Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) of the University at Albany-SUNY, and Vice President and Special Advisor to the President, University-wide Economic Innovation and Outreach. Dr. Kaloyeros received his Ph.D. in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1987. Dr. Kaloyeros has been actively involved in the development and implementation of New York’s high tech strategy to become a global leader in the nanotechnology driven economy. Kaloyeros grew up in Lebanon. He came to the United States for graduate school; he was first hired at the University of Albany in 1988. By the 1990s, he caught the attention of then-Gov. Mario Cuomo, who saw nanotechnology as a way to improve New York's economy. Dr. K, as he came to be called, has worked for five governors. SUNY Polytechnic Institute became more than an education center. Under Kaloyeros, it grew into a de facto development office for the state. It formed corporations to oversee the public spending to build facilities -- like the Syracuse Film Hub -- for private companies. Millions of dollars flowed through SUNY Poly -- which Kaloyeros headed -- to two special corporations to build facilities like the SolarCity factory in Buffalo. NY Attorney General Eric Schneiderman charged Kaloyerosin September 2016 with three felony counts in connection to bid-rigging. These charges are separate from the ones in the federal complaint.
