Cell phone tycoon Denis O'Brien received the National Order of Honour and Merit form the Haitian president for his work helping Haiti recover from the 2010 earthquake. He funded the restoration of Haiti's century-old Iron Market with his own money, and has built 50 primary and secondary schools in the last 18 months. In 2010, Digicel bought out sister company Digicel Pacific for $825 million. O'Brien's other holdings include radio stations, online recruiting sites in China, and a Portuguese resort. The son of a human rights activist created the nonprofit organization Front Line to fly activists out of harm's way. The Iris O’Brien Foundation, based in the Dublin headquarters of Mr O’Brien’s Communicorp company, distributes grants in Ireland and overseas. Since starting Digicel he’s expanded the telecom company to 31 markets in the Caribbean, South and Central America and Oceania. He owns stakes in publicly-traded Irish media conglomerate Independent News and Media, engineering company Actavo, golf resorts on the Iberian peninsula, and a hospital in Dublin’s suburbs, among other holdings.
