Ken Thompson co-invented the UNIX operating system with Dennis Ritchie at Bell Telephone Laboratories. It was a scaled-down version of the Multics operating system, hence the pun in the name "UNIX." Thanks to the development of the C programming language by Ritchie, UNIX became portable over many computer platforms. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley.
