Founded his first hospital in 1984. Named it Asklepios after Greek God of medicine. Now owns 111 hospitals with combined $2.9 billion in revenues; employs 36,000 worldwide. While 96 are in Germany, also has hospitals in Portugal, Greece, Russia, Romania; has six in California operated by Pacific Health Corp. Also has joint venture with Tongji University in China. Practiced as an accountant and lawyer before founding the hospital chain; has degree from Insead at Fontainbleau, France, and an MBA from Harvard University. Owns the Kempinski Hotel Falkenstein in Koenigstein, a five star luxury spa and hotel in the Taunus mountains near Frankfurt, Germany.
