Previously, he served as the Director (SES) of the Biological Technologies Office (BTO) at DARPA where he developed breakthrough technologies and capabilities in areas of neurotechnology, gene editing/synthetic biology, and outpacing infectious diseases. He was responsible for developing the biotechnology strategy for DARPA and for evaluating the scientific merit and impact for over 30 DARPA programs in biotechnology totaling nearly $300 million in annual investments at national labs, industry, and academic institutions. Collectively these programs aimed to deliver biotech capability to the United States to detect any threat, deliver near-instantaneous countermeasures, accelerate warfighter performance/recovery, and provide operational overmatch. Before joining DARPA, Dr. Sanchez was an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Neuroscience at the University of Miami, and a faculty member of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. He directed the Neuroprosthetics Research Group, where he oversaw development of neurotechnology medical treatments for treating paralysis and stroke, and for deep brain stimulation for movement disorders and neuropsychiatric illness. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers, holds seven patents, and authored two books on the design of neurotechnology. He has served as a reviewer for the NIH, DoD, and multiple foundations, and as an associate editor of multiple journals of biomedical engineering and neurophysiology.
