William E. Sharer is a Republican member of the New Mexico State Senate, representing District 1 (San Juan County). He was first elected to the chamber in 2000. He's a Ranking Member of the SENATE CORPORATIONS & TRANSPORTATION committee and member of the SENATE INDIAN & CULTURAL AFFAIRS and Senate COMMITTEES' COMMITTEE. Sharer earned his A.A. from the New Mexico Military Institute in 1979 and his B.A. from New Mexico State University in 1981. His professional experience includes being the owner of Popcorn Patch from 1992 to 1993, the general manager of a Taco Bell from 1993 to 1995, and as the owner of the Credit Bureau of Farmington. Sharer served in the United States Army from 1982 to 1992. Sharer led the charge against same-sex marriage in New Mexico in 2013, filing a lawsuit against the clerk of Doña Ana County when he began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
