The AIS study group has already conducted one workshop and scheduled others in conjunction with annual conferences (GIFT User Symposium, Intelligent Tutoring System Conference, and AI in Education Conference). One of the topics discussed by the AIS study group is the efficacy of component-level interoperability through standardized messages between learner, instructional, domain, and interface models. This would reduce the cost to maintain and reuse components. While AISs have been shown to be highly effective, the ROI for these systems could be significantly higher if the time and skill to make them were reduced. Standards can help us with that goal.
