ELIZABETH BELSCHNER SCURLOCK, born March 12, 1904 in Edna, Texas passed away on June 9, 2003. She was the daughter of Mattie Quinn Belschner and Andrew Belschner. At age eighteen, she moved to Houston where she met Eddy Clark Scurlock who came to Houston to begin his career in the oil business. In 1927, they married at First United Methodist Church in Houston. Early in their marriage, she accompanied her husband for several years as he sold petroleum products throughout the southern part of the United States and then in Minneapolis. Mr. and Mrs. Scurlock settled back in Houston where her husband formed Scurlock Oil Company in 1936. Elizabeth and Eddy Scurlock enjoyed over sixty years of wonderful marriage. The couple attended First United Methodist Church and then joined St. Luke's United Methodist Church in 1950 to be with their daughter Laura Lee and son-in-law Jack S. Blanton. Mrs. Scurlock enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and had a life-long love of dancing. She was a member of Chapter AC of PEO, The River Oaks Rose Club, The Blue Bird Circle and was actively involved in the Variety Boys Club (The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Houston). The Scurlocks were very active in many civic and philanthropic endeavors. They formed Scurlock Foundation in the early 1950's to support their major interests of hospitals, church related organizations and higher education. They provided particularly strong support to Lon Morris Junior College and Southern Methodist University. They were also instrumental in the building of the Scurlock Tower, a part of Methodist Hospital. The Scurlocks were recognized many times for their contributions to the Houston community including awards from The March of Dimes, The Houston School for the Deaf, and The Variety Boys Club. She was predeceased by her husband Eddy Scurlock in 1988 and their daughter Laura Lee Blanton in 1999. Elizabeth Scurlock survived six sisters and one brother-- Minnie Wheaton, Annie Berryhill, Sallie Grolich, Rose Blankenship, Josephine Adare, Dora Imhoff and Fritz Belschner. Mrs. Scurlock is survived by son-in-law Jack S. Blanton, Sr. and by grandchildren Elizabeth Blanton Wareing, her husband, Peter Staub Wareing, Jack S. Blanton, Jr., his wife, Leslie Dyess Blanton, Eddy Scurlock Blanton and his wife, Kelli Lynn Blanton. Great grandchildren Laura Wareing Wheless, her husband William Wheless, Julie Wareing, Billy Wareing, Mary Catherine Blanton, Jackson Blanton, Elizabeth Blanton, Allison Blanton, Eddy Blanton, Jr., and Harrison Blanton survive her. She is also survived by her nephews Andrew Belschner, Billy Belschner and Forest Wayne Imhoff.
