Mari’s profile photo Mari Kuraishi Published on LinkedIn Boston MFA forced to pull back museum goers from posing with kimono as homage to Camille Monet's "La Japonaise."I realize I'm not Japanese-American. I'm just Japanese. But I did grow up outside of Japan and know how easy it is to be pigeon-holed as a minority. But how does forcing the MFA to cancel an interactive exhibit that might otherwise have sparked greater engagement with Camille Monet, Impressionism, or japonisme actually help combat cultural appropriation? Why assume the basest motives and takeaways from museum-goers experience? Did the protesting Asian-Americans not notice that the offending kimono had been "commissioned by the Japanese broadcaster NHK to accompany “La Japonaise” for the recent traveling exhibit “Looking East”; visitors to museums in Tokyo, Kyoto, and the MFA’s sister museum in Nagoya could try them on as part of the exhibit?" That in fact Japanese museumgoers had worn the kimono and posed in front of the blonde in the painting and imagined themselves as her? And would they have censured it as appropriation of Western culture? 3 Comments Like Comment Share See all articles No alt text provided for this image Congratulations!!!
