John Liew is one of the founders of AQR, a private hedge fund firm based in Greenwich, Connecticut. The firm was founded in 1998 by Cliff Asness, David G. Kabiller, Robert Krail and John Liew. The firm focuses on traditional and alternative investment strategies and has $224 billion assets under management. AQR operates globally with 900 employees and offices in London, Sydney and Hong Kong. Before cofounding AQR, Liew worked at Goldman Sachs as a portfolio manager, where he developed and managed quantitative trading strategies. He created the Liew College Fellows Fund to finance undergraduates who have unpaid research opportunities with the University of Chicago's faculty. He earned a B.A. in economics from the University of Chicago, where he was elected a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and went on to earn an M.B.A. and a Ph.D. in finance, also from Chicago.
