Rice is currently a Distinguished Visiting Research Fellow at American University's School of International Service. From 2013-2017, she directed the National Security Council staff. She served as the US Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2009 to 2013, and was US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Special Assistant to President William J. Clinton.
