The Madison Avenue Bookshop was founded in 1973 by Arthur Lehman Loeb, a member of the Loeb-Rhodes family. Mr. Loeb and his siblings inherited an estate of some $200 million after the deaths of their parents, John Langeloth Loeb Sr. and Frances Lehman Loeb. Arthur Loeb said he had wanted to be an English professor but gave up his dream to work as a book salesman. In the mid-1980's, he hired Perry Haberman, a former model, as a stock boy at the store. Mr. Haberman worked his way up to manager. (Mr. Loeb said he never wanted to be manager.) In 2000, Mr. Loeb gave Mr. Haberman the building and the store and retired.
