Cawthorne was named assistant dean in 1997, after serving as a senior research associate in the study of testing, evaluation, and educational policy at LSOE and following an appointment as director of the education bureau for the National Urban League from 1995-1997. Cawthorne earned a bachelor's degree from Harvard University and a master's degree in teaching from Antioch-Putney Graduate School of Education, and he has served as a consultant to school systems in the Boston area and nationally, including Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Atlanta.
