Heather McHugh joined Capitol Hill Strategies, LLC, in September 2013 as Vice President. McHugh has more than 13 years of diverse government and campaign experience including working with both House and Senate leadership and with a party committee. McHugh previously served as Legislative Director for Senator Charles E Schumer (D-NY), Chairman of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee. In this capacity, she was Senator Schumer’s top policy advisor on all aspects of his wide ranging legislative interests, including his Finance and Banking Committee work, and his Leadership and NY priorities and interests. McHugh joined Senator Schumer’s staff after spending four years as the Policy Director for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee under then-Chairman Chris Van Hollen. In that role, McHugh served as a policy liaison between the DCCC and the House Democratic Leadership and legislative committees. Prior to working for the DCCC, McHugh served as the Legislative Director for Congressman Steve Israel (D-NY). She served as his primary policy advisor, staffed his work on the House Financial Services Committee and managed his campaign to win appointment to the House Appropriations Committee. McHugh’s first job on Capitol Hill was with Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez (D-NY) where she advised the Congresswoman in relation to her Financial Services Committee assignment. A native of New York, McHugh currently resides in Washington DC and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and International Relations from the University of Richmond.
