Patrick Dowling

Dr. Dowling is professor and chair of the Department of Family Medicine and is the Kaiser Permanente Professor of Community Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. A graduate of the Medical College of Ohio and the University of Michigan School of Public Health, he trained in family medicine at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and is board certified in family medicine, preventive medicine and public health. Before joining UCLA in 1998, Dr. Dowling served as chair of Family Medicine at Harbor-UCLA for nine years and previously directed Family Medicine training programs at Brown University and Cook County Hospital. His first position was as medical director of the United Farm Workers Clinics (UFW) under Cesar Chavez in California’s Coachella and Imperial valleys. He serves on the Board of the Drew University of Medicine and Science in South L.A. and is Chair of the Public Health Commission of LA County Department of Public Health. In an effort to address the linguistic and cultural barriers to care faced by millions of Spanish speaking Hispanics in California, he and a colleague founded, and obtained private funding for, the UCLA International Medical Graduate (IMG) program. This unique program in Family Medicine at UCLA prepares immigrant, bilingual, bicultural unlicensed physicians from Latin America, who are legally residing here, to become eligible for licensure and residency training in family medicine in California. He and his wife, Anne Marie, live in Sherman Oaks with their four children.
