As part of her divorce settlement with Jeff Bezos, MacKenzie Bezos received a quarter of Jeff’s stake in Amazon—which made her not only the third richest woman in America but also the fourth richest woman on the planet. Bezos has signed the Giving Pledge, promising to donate more than half of her wealth to charitable causes. That could move her down the ranks. (Her ex has not signed the pledge.) A novelist, she has worked as a dishwasher, a waitress, a deli cashier, alibrary monitor and a research assistant to the late novelist Toni Morrison.
