Schierl, who was named chief executive of Fort Howard Paper in 1974, led the company through unprecedented growth through the 1980s. Fort Howard's sales grew from $296 million in 1978 to more than $1.7 billion in 1987. In 1988 he led a $3.7 billion management takeover of the company and later orchestrated a partial sale of Fort Howard's profitable paper cup division to a Massachusetts firm, which moved the operations to Chicago. Schierl resigned in 1990. He died died Monday October 23 2017.
