Jeffrey Berman

As a member of the Public Policy and Governmental Affairs Group, Jeff Berman utilizes his distinguished background to provide strategic counsel to clients on public policy issues involving the White House, federal agencies and departments, Capitol Hill, and state and local governments. Mr. Berman’s practice is broad-ranging and includes policy matters in a number of different fields, including energy, transportation, homeland security, health care, telecommunications, education and other matters. He represents corporations, associations, governmental entities and non-profits. Mr. Berman maintains contacts across a broad spectrum of elected and political leaders at both the federal and state levels. In addition to his expertise on public policy matters, he has extensive experience in the negotiation of agreements subject to compliance with federal regulations and international agreements. Serving successfully as the National Delegate Director for the Obama presidential campaign, Mr. Berman led the historic charge to assemble the 2008 delegate majority to nominate Barack Obama for president. He devised primary and caucus strategies, supervised Obama compliance with all state legal and Democratic Party requirements for the nominating contests and oversaw the selection and tracking of all delegates to the Democratic National Convention. At the National Convention, Berman oversaw the development of the 2008 Democratic Party platform and the resolution of all credentials controversies, including those involving the Florida and Michigan primaries. Mr. Berman supervised development of the rules and procedures for the National Convention and negotiated the presidential nominating procedures that guaranteed a unified Convention vote for Obama. Mr. Berman previously served as a longtime adviser to former House of Representatives Democratic Leader Dick Gephardt, working as a senior political adviser to Leader Gephardt from 1987-2004, including formal roles in his 1988 and 2004 presidential campaigns. Mr. Berman began his career in politics in former Ohio Sen. John Glenn’s presidential campaign in 1983-84, subsequently serving under Chairman Glenn as Counsel to the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs and as Deputy Campaign Manager for his 1986 re-election effort. Mr. Berman is an active member of the Democratic National Committee, and served on the Democratic Change Commission, which was established to improve national Democratic Party rules following the 2008 presidential election.
