Theodore R Mitchell

Theodore R. Mitchell has been a director of McClatchy since September 2001. He is president and chief executive officer of NewSchools Venture Fund, a national funder of education innovations, a position he has held since September 2005. He also currently serves as President of the California State Board of Education. He was president of Occidental College in Los Angeles, a position he held from July 1999 to August 2005. Dr. Mitchell was vice president of education and strategic initiatives at the J. Paul Getty Trust from 1998 to 1999. Dr. Mitchell held various positions with the University of California, Los Angeles from 1992 to 1998, including serving as vice chancellor, academic planning and budget, and vice chancellor for external affairs. He served as deputy to the president and to the provost of Stanford University from 1991 to 1992. Prior to that time, he was a professor at Dartmouth College, where he also served as chair of the Department of Education.
