Joseph E. Gibson, a longtime professor of law and accounting at the University of Virginia, died Aug. 17 2020. He was 96 Born in Fauquier County, Mr. Gibson enlisted in the United States Air Force after high school and served from 1942 to 1946. He later attended the University of Virginia on the G.I. Bill. He went on to law school at U.Va. and passed the bar exam in 1953. Mr. Gibson continued his studies after law school and, in 1955, he passed the exam to become a certified public accountant and went into private practice as an attorney. In 1956, Mr. Gibson joined the faculty at U.Va. and went on to teach accounting and tax law for 48 years. In addition to several grant-funded publications, Mr. Gibson edited the Michie’s Federal Tax Handbook and co-authored the CPA exam for several years. After retirement, Mr. Gibson continued to serve as representative for the University Board of Visitors and for the University of Virginia Tax Foundation. Mr. Gibson was actively involved in his community, as well; he served on the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors from 1967 to 1977. Additionally, he served as president of the Virginia Tax Foundation, chairman of the Board of Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, president of West Leigh Property Owners Association and president of the Meriwether Lewis Elementary School PTA. Mr. Gibson is survived by his wife, Patricia; her family, Sandra, Len, Rachel, Jay and Henry; his sons, Joseph and Richard; his daughters, Beverly and Pamela; and many grandchildren.
