Founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low, Girl Scouts' membership has grown from 18 members in Savannah, Georgia, to 3.4 million members throughout the United States, including U.S. territories, and in more than 90 countries through USA Girl Scouts Overseas. Girl Scout national headquarters is located in New York City, with more than 400 employees dedicated to supporting the Girl Scout Movement. In partnership with over 100 local Girl Scout councils or offices, more than three million girls and adults, our National Board of Directors, and countless corporate, government, and individual supporters, Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Girl Scouts of the USA was chartered by the United States Congress in 1950. Through membership in the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), GSUSA is part of a worldwide family of 10 million girls and adults in 145 countries.
