https://www.exchangemonitor.com/mox-prime-cbi-approves-merger-mcdermott-2/ May 2018 - A merger of McDermott International and CB&I, the majority partner in the contractor building a plutonium-conversion plant for the Department of Energy, is expected to close May 10 after shareholders for both companies approved the combination. That is according LinkedIn About us About the MOX Project: In 1999, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) signed a contract with a consortium, now called CB&I AREVA MOX Services, LLC to design, build, and operate a Mixed Oxide (MOX) Fuel Fabrication Facility. This facility will be a major component in the United States’ program to dispose of surplus weapon-grade plutonium. The facility will take surplus weapon-grade plutonium, remove impurities, and mix it with uranium oxide to form MOX fuel pellets for reactor fuel assemblies. These assemblies will be irradiated in commercial nuclear power reactors. The design of the facility is based on AREVA’s MELOX and La Hague MOX facilities in France. The French have used MOX technology for almost two decades and currently supply MOX fuel to over 30 reactors worldwide. The facility will be built at the Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, South Carolina. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will license and oversee the facility. The French design is being “Americanized” to ensure that the facility meets all federal safety and security requirements. It will also be a hardened facility, similar to a nuclear reactor. When operational, the facility will be capable of turning 3.5 metric tons of weapon-grade plutonium into MOX fuel assemblies annually. The facility will be licensed for 20 years, with operations expected to continue into the 2030s. https://www.mcdermott.com/What-We-Do/Project-Profiles/Mixed-Oxide-Fuel-Fabrication-Facility MIXED OXIDE FUEL FABRICATION FACILITY PrintShare National Nuclear Security Administration, U.S. Department of Energy Location Aiken, South Carolina, USA Industry Served Power Region North America Scope of Work Design and Construction Summary CB&I AREVA MOX Services, LLC is designing and constructing the Mixed Oxide (MOX) Fuel Fabrication Facility at the U.S. Department of Energy's Savannah River Site. The first-of-a-kind $4.8 billion facility is a key component of the National Nuclear Security Administration's program to dispose of surplus weapons-grade plutonium. It will be capable of converting 34 metric tons of weapons-grade plutonium into MOX fuel assemblies for use in commercial nuclear power plants. In 2009, the project team completed construction of an administrative building and 37,000-square-foot secure warehouse. Construction is proceeding on the 500,000-square-foot MOX process building, which will require more than 170,000 cubic yards of concrete, 35,000 tons of steel rebar, more than 3,000,000 feet of power and control cable, and more than 80 miles of piping. Our energy-efficient design and construction of the 57,000-square-foot administration building meets standards outlined for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification. The warehouse also is designed for LEED certification specifications.
