Every morning, as I readied myself for a day with twenty fifth graders, a pit of dread grew in my stomach. Put simply, I was a really bad teacher when I was starting out. If it wasn't for the wisdom of an attentive principal, a caring mentor, and, possibly, the grit I had been forced to build as an undersized high school pitcher, I probably would have quit. Instead, I strode to my classroom each morning repeating, "Today will be better than yesterday." That belief in incremental growth, coupled with a set of consistent skill exercises, was the base upon which I could set myself on a path from bad teacher, to decent teacher, to solid teacher, to great teacher. It was the same base my students needed. For more than a decade, I have built off that early experience, helping students and clients develop the mindsets and skills associated with radical performance improvement.
