A History of Distinction in Innovative Patient Care Founded in 1861, at the invitation of Abraham Lincoln, the Daughters of Charity began their service to District residents who were sick, poor and vulnerable. President Abraham Lincoln signed an Act of Congress to charter Providence Hospital, the longest continuously operating hospital in Washington, D.C. Providence established itself as a teaching hospital when other District hospitals were flooded with war wounded during the Civil War. Providence is still a teaching hospital, offering three graduate medical teaching programs and serving as a rotational site for nursing and medical students and residents. Providence Hospital has changed location three times since 1861. Our current campus in northeast DC continues to grow and evolve to meet the needs of today’s healthcare consumers. Providence’s Mission Rooted in the loving ministry of Jesus as healer, we commit ourselves to serving all persons with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable. Our Catholic health ministry is dedicated to spiritually centered, holistic care which sustains and improves the health of individuals and communities. We are advocates for a compassionate and just society through our actions and our words. Our Vision We envision a strong, vibrant Catholic health ministry in the United States which will lead to the transformation of healthcare. We will ensure service that is committed to health and well-being for our communities and that responds to the needs of individuals throughout the life cycle. We will expand the role of laity, in both leadership and sponsorship, to ensure a Catholic health ministry in the future.
