District 1 includes more than 175,000 members in 327 CWA local unions in New York, New Jersey, New England, and eastern Canada. Our diverse membership is employed in many different sectors of the economy: telecommunications; health care; higher education; manufacturing; broadcast and cable television; commercial printing and newspapers; state, local, and country government. CWA Vice-President Dennis Trainor was elected by delegates to the union's 75th convention. District 1 telephone workers have participated in successful large-scale strikes at Bell Atlantic, Southern New England Telephone, and Verizon. With support from the district, telecom and health care locals have won organizing rights agreements which have facilitated the recruitment of thousands of new members. D-1 has been a leader in supporting community-labor alliances like Jobs With Justice and New York's Working Families Party. In New Jersey, our state worker locals waged a strong fight against attacks on the public sector by Republican Governor Christie Whitman and played a key role in the election of her more labor-friendly successor, Jim McGreevey. Further information on District 1's elected officers and locals, political action and education programs, organizing, bargaining, and membership mobilization can be found on this web site.
