A native New Yorker, Dr. Wallerstein received his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College in 1971. He holds Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in political science from M.I.T. and a master’s in public administration from the Maxwell School of Syracuse. Before joining the Maxwell School, where he served as dean for the past seven years, Dr. Wallerstein was vice president of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation in Chicago, a leading philanthropic group. In the mid-1990s, under President Bill Clinton, he was deputy assistant secretary of defense for counterproliferation policy and senior defense representative for trade security policy.
