Samuel N Hazen

Sam Hazen is president and chief operating officer for HCA, which is based in Nashville, Tennessee and is one of the nation’s largest providers of healthcare services. Hazen oversees the company’s operations, which include approximately 170 hospitals, 118 ambulatory surgery centers, numerous outpatient facilities, and various physician practices across its 42 domestic markets and in the United Kingdom. A 33-year veteran of HCA, Hazen has served in various senior positions for HCA including president of operations from 2011-2015 which had similar responsibilities to his current role. In 2015, he was named chief operating officer, and in 2016, he was promoted to president and COO. Hazen also served as president of HCA’s Western Group, which included all operations west of the Mississippi River and represented approximately one-half of the company’s revenue. Prior to 2001, Hazen was chief financial officer for the Western Group. Prior to 1995, he was chief financial officer for two different divisions in the company, overseeing operations in North Texas and various other markets. Hazen began his career in Humana’s Financial Management Specialist Program in 1983 and has held chief financial officer positions at hospitals in Georgia and Las Vegas. Hazen currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Nashville Health Care Council and the HCA Foundation. As an active member of the healthcare community, his past board memberships include the Federation of American Hospitals and various other health system boards. Hazen earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Kentucky and his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. He and his wife, Glenna, live in Nashville, and they have two sons, Luke and John.
