WileECoyote WileECoyote  Mark Deli Siljander A former congressman and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations pleaded guilty to charges of obstruction of justice and acting as an unregistered foreign agent, related to his work for an Islamic charity with alleged ties to al Qaeda, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Mark Deli Siljander, 59, of Great Falls, Va., pleaded guilty in federal court in Kansas City, Mo. He and another man, who also pleaded guilty, were scheduled to go on trial next week.

The former Republican represented Michigan in the House of Representatives from 1981 to 1987 and was appointed by President Reagan as a U.S. delegate to the U.N. for one year in 1987.

Mr. Siljander was indicted two years ago on charges related to his work for the Islamic American Relief Agency. He faces up to 15 years in federal prison without parole and a fine of up to $500,000.

WileECoyote WileECoyote  David Frum Wonder what they had for lunch?
http://www.frumforum.com/aei-says-goodbye

"Dear Arthur,

This will memorialize our conversation at lunch today. Effective immediately, my position as a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute is terminated. I appreciate the consideration that delays my emptying of my office until after my return from travel next week. Premises will be vacated no later than April 9.

I have had many fruitful years at the American Enterprise Institute, and I do regret this abrupt and unexpected conclusion of our relationship.

Very truly yours,

David Frum"

WileECoyote WileECoyote  University of Notre Dame Was doing my best to build out the board for St. Patty's Day - but Notre Dame has 55 people on its board!

A work in progress, it does answer the question whether there are Republicans in Chicago.
WileECoyote WileECoyote  Salvation Army LA Times Salvation Army is a residential real estate powerhouse.

The charity, known for its image of sacrifice, owns houses in the U.S. with a total value of about $4 billion as of 2008. The homes are provided to officers rent-free in lieu of higher pay, it says.

WileECoyote WileECoyote  US Chamber of Commerce Interesting piece.

"The chamber spent more than $144 million on lobbying and grass-roots organizing last year, a 60% increase over 2008, and well beyond the spending of individual labor unions or the Democratic or Republican national committees."

  rjgwood rjgwood  @WileECoyote - Precisely
WileECoyote WileECoyote  @rjgwood IMHO it is not new, especially if you view philanthropic organizations as a number of wealthy individuals working together. What I'd suggest is unique here is how it has advanced the Miliken "brand"
rjgwood rjgwood  @WileECoyote I agree...but, is this a new kind of use for a philanthropic organization...not merely content with manipulating opinions...perhaps market manipulation as well?
WileECoyote WileECoyote  @rjgwood Michael Milken is not alone in advancing financial, political or ideological objectives through philanthropic organizations. His ability to attract the best and the brightest to events staged by the Milken Institute has been on of the keys to his public redemption, IMHO.....
WileECoyote WileECoyote  To all Michael Milken analysts (@rjgwood, @WileECoyote): Incline Village-Crystal Bay Nevada has 9,952 residents, most of them part time - including Mr. Milken. You'd be very suprised to see who else spends time there.....
WileECoyote WileECoyote  Feed the Children On the basis of funds raised, only the United Way and Salvation Army are larger charities - but Feed the Children seized by family turmoil and legal drama. A recent court ruling restored the authority of the board in firing the Jones family - but there is much more trouble to come....
WileECoyote WileECoyote  Philanthropy 400 - America's largest char... Fidelity, Schwab and other financial services firms soliticit and manage charitable accounts from their clients - these operations are included as charities on this list.

WileECoyote WileECoyote  Jim Letten Follow the search string on this fellow, as he withdraws from prosecuting the O'Keefe case - ending a stand off between the two Senators from Louisiana, Vitter and Landrieu.

What a rich vein of potential conspiracy theories!
WileECoyote WileECoyote  @kevin Ran across a reference to something called the "Institute of Politics" at Tulane but could not document anything except that a few lower level Bush adminstration people were guest speakers.

I think the Tulane/Breitbart connection is a red herring as well - but wanted to leave no stone unturned in this case.
kevin kevin  @WileECoyote though I guess Tulane is just the power school in New Orleans, so it wouldn't be terribly interesting unless they were friends from there. It seems like Choice is dominated by Tulane too.
kevin kevin  @WileECoyote thanks! it's interesting because Kevin Kane went there. I've only been able to confirm that he went there "in the eighties," and Breitbart graduated in 1991. it would be interesting to see if they were there at the same time.
