In April 1990, HHS Secretary Louis W. Sullivan, M.D., announced the appointment of Deborah Lee Messick of Arlington, Va., as a deputy assistant secretary for public affairs.
A veteran of the Washington scene, Ms. Messick came to the Department of Health and Human Services after having served since April 1988 as deputy director of communications and as deputy chief of staff at the Republican National Committee.
Between her first stint at the RNC as Southeastern U.S. spokesperson during 1982 and 1985, and her most recent service there, Ms. Messick eld high level positions dealing largely with communications and management for Daniel J. Edelman, Inc., Ruder Finn & Rotman and Henry J. Kaufman & Associates, Inc., all of Washington.
She has also worked in Wilmington, Del., for the Delmarva Power Company, the Delaware Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce and in the Office of the Governor of Delaware.
Ms. Messick was born in Wilmington. She received her bachelor's degree in communications from the University of Delaware at Newark in 1978. « less
