Schumacher-Matos left in 2003 and founded Rumbo Newspapers/Meximerica Media, a chain of four Spanish language dailies in Houston, Austin, San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley. By its second year Rumbo was named one of the three best Hispanic newspapers in the US and had great impact in Texas, where Mr. Schumacher-Matos was on the front line of Latino issues. Due to the changing nature of advertising, the newspapers were converted into weeklies and recently sold.
Schumacher-Matos received a bachelor's degree in literature and politics from Vanderbilt University and a master's degree in international economics and politics from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He has been a Fulbright Fellow in Japan and a Bi-National Commission Fellow in Spain. He served in the U.S. Army and was awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious service in Vietnam. « less
