Dr. Carl Grant serves as chairman of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce President’s Advisory Group. He is also a senior vice president, executive counselor to the president and CEO, and member of the Management Committee. Grant conducts fact-finding visits to determine the special concerns of CEOs of leading domestic and global corporations, explains what the Chamber is doing for them in Washington, D.C., and around the world, and secures their participation in the Chamber’s leadership program. Grant previously ran the large sales operation of the Chamber, which sells memberships and conducts special fundraising projects. Before that, he was responsible for the Chamber’s business communications program. As senior vice president of Communications, he oversaw six divisions. Grant joined the Chamber as a vice president in 1977. From 1989 to 1990, he anchored a national business program weekday mornings on more than 100 TV stations. From 1984 to 1989, he co-anchored a two-hour national business show weekday mornings on ESPN, in addition to his management responsibilities. Prior to joining the Chamber, Grant was a TV news executive and an award-winning anchorman and held high-level U.S. government positions. In 1976, he was director of public affairs for the U.S. General Services Administration and received the administrator’s highest civilian service award. From 1972 to 1976, he served in three other appointed positions: associate director of the Defense Manpower Commission and editor of a report to the president and Congress; director of the President’s Commission on White House Fellows; and executive director of the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. For his work at Employer Support, he received the Secretary of Defense’s top civilian award. From 1961 to 1972, he was corporate news director for the Kaiser Broadcasting Company and news director and anchorman at its TV station in Philadelphia. Grant also held news executive and anchor positions at TV stations in Ohio and Michigan. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Kent State University (1992 Distinguished Communications Alumnus Award) and his Ph.D. from Ohio State University. He served on active duty with the 82nd Airborne Division and continued his military career as a citizen soldier, retiring as a brigadier general from the Army National Guard. He received the Legion of Merit, among other awards. Grant and his wife, Carol, have three adult children.
