Mark Deli Siljander A former congressman and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations pleaded guilty to charges of obstruction of justice and acting as an unregistered foreign agent, related to his work for an Islamic charity with alleged ties to al Qaeda, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Mark Deli Siljander, 59, of Great Falls, Va., pleaded guilty in federal court in Kansas City, Mo. He and another man, who also pleaded guilty, were scheduled to go on trial next week.
The former Republican represented Michigan in the House of Representatives from 1981 to 1987 and was appointed by President Reagan as a U.S. delegate to the U.N. for one year in 1987.
Mr. Siljander was indicted two years ago on charges related to his work for the Islamic American Relief Agency. He faces up to 15 years in federal prison without parole and a fine of up to $500,000.
