profiling the powers that be in the world of fracking
High-volume horizontal hydraulic fracturing is being touted as the pathway to a clean-energy future by the gas industry, but questions remain about the practice's safety (fracking uses hazardous chemicals and liberates methane, both of which can taint water supplies), the industry's projections of well production and retrievable reserves (both of which may be overestimated in order to encourage investment), and about how "clean" the practice is (when taking extraction into account, burning natural gas may release more carbon than coal).
